With 5 gameweeks in a space of 4 weeks, it will be wise to get your defense sorted. We have compiled a list of what we feel are 5 good defensive options that you can consider for the coming gameweeks.

DIFFERENTIAL BUDGET defender: Shane Duffy (Brighton, £4.5)

A tough-tackling center half, Duffy’s prominence is rising as a budget fantasy option at the back with 2 clean sheets in the last 3 games. He has one of the best stats in the league for Clearances, Blocks, and Interceptions, 126 to be precise and currently ranked 2nd. He has been in the top 3 in 2 of the last 4 gameweeks for CBI’s and has also earned vital bonus points on those occasions. Brighton’s 5 clean sheets thus far have come against opposition currently ranked below them and their next 5 fixtures include Stoke (H), Man Utd (A), Crystal Palace (H), Liverpool (H) and Huddersfield (A), 3 of which are currently ranked below them. Sitting in only 2.1% teams, he can be a good differential option as a budget defender.

BUDGET defender: Ben Mee (Burnley, £4.5)

Ben Mee is definitely a solid choice if you are in the market for budget defenders. The Clarets have a leader in their defense in the form of Ben Mee and he has been absolutely stellar in recent games. Currently second for CBI’s along with Shane Duffy, he has earned 2 clean sheets and 5 bonus points in his last 2 games. In the next 5 fixtures, the only threat to their already impressive defensive record is Arsenal in GW 13 and with such a kind run of fixtures coming up, he can be vital to your squad. Apart from Stephen Ward (Priced at £4.8 and owned by 17.6%) and Nick Pope (GK), Ben Mee tops the charts for Bonus Points earned in Burnley with 6, and ranks second according to the BPS- which is exactly what makes the difference between him and the other Burnley defenders priced at £4.5.

DIFFERENTIAL MID-PRICED defender: Joel Matip (Liverpool, £5.5)

This defender has been making a name for himself with consistent performances and points at Anfield. Matip has been a central figure in the Reds’ defense and has been keeping regular clean sheets. His performances have also earned him bonus points on a couple of occasions and he can be a threat upfront as well as he showed last gameweek. Priced on the higher side, at £5.5 and owned by just 2.9% of managers, he can be considered a good differential mid-priced defender. Matip ranks 3rd for tackles and 1st for CBIs amongst the Liverpool squad. Also, keep in mind Liverpool have a very good run of fixtures- only 2 gameweeks have a FDR of 4 between GW12 and GW21!

MID-PRICED defender: Phil Jones (Man Utd, £5.5)

This season has been sort of a resurgence for Phil Jones, who has been absolutely incredible at the heart of the Manchester United’s defense. With 8 clean sheets his meteoric rise is also visible in his price as he has been the highest price rise this season yet. He is a must have as United have a relishing run of games up ahead and you could have a guaranteed star in your team. Jones has by far been the busiest defender for United with 86 CBI’s, 25 more than the next defender, he has also made the most number of tackles and earned the most bonus points. However, United, as well as 15.8% of managers will now be sweating on the extent of the injury he picked up in a friendly against Germany.

PREMIUM defender: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea, £6.8)

Chelsea’s leading point scorer, this high flying full back has been in scintillating form of late. With 5 assist and a goal this season, his attacking returns are attractive but so are his defensive stats. The full back, Azpilicueta has made more Clearances, Blocks, and Interceptions than any of his Chelsea teammates. With 5 clean sheets, he also ranks 3rd overall for most number of tackles- 19. With Chelsea having a decent run of fixtures upcoming, there are no signs of him slowing down. And if you must choose a premium defensive option, Azpilicueta is your man. 8 out of Chelsea’s next 10 fixtures have FDR of 2!
